Warangal or Orugallu or Ekasila Nagaram is a city and a municipal corporation in Warangal district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Warangal is 145 km northeast of the state capital of Hyderabad. Warangal district has an area of 12,846 km2, and a population of 2,818,832 (1991 census). Warangal is known for its granite quarries (notably the black and brown varieties), grain market (for rice and chillies), cotton, and tobacco. Warangal is part of tertiary city including Kazipet and Hanamkonda. The region once came under Kakatiya dynasty. Nearest airport is in Hyderabad approximately 130 km. It falls on the New Delhi - Chennai trunk train route so many important trains like Grand Trunk express call on here. By road its connected to Hyderabad through NH202.
History and Culture of Warangal
Warangal and Hanamkonda as legend goes is linked with the dynasties of Great "Vishnukundins" and even prior to it also of the Buddhist and pre-Buddhist periods of indian History.During Eighth Century A.D. , Warangal with an old name "Orukal" has served as Capital City of Yadava king of the Kakatiyas or Ganapatis making Warangal as Capital City.The name of Warangal "Orugallu" is said to be correct form of Orukal which is the original designation ,the old town.The words the middle of the Warangal fort.The Kakatiya line seems to have been in existance even earlier to the middle of 7th Century A.D.because the famous Chines Piligrim Hieun-Tsang,mentions the nameof the Kingdom of "Danakakitya" in the South.The family name Kakatiya is derived from the local appellation of the Goddess Durga(Kakati).
