Eight Large & Medium Scale Industries in the District are producing variety of products viz, Paper, Duplex Board, Caustic Soda, Ferro Alloys, Transmission Gears, Food Concentrate , Herbal Medicines & Pharmaceuticals. The Specialty of Large & Medium Industries in our District are not posing threat to the existing SSI Units of the District, on the other hand they are complementary.
The future industrial growth of Uttara Kannada District is bright owing to the Sea Bird Project at Karwar & due to the Large Investment likely to take place on Tadri Port and also the proposed Railway line between Ankola & Hubli.
It is the thinking of the Government to remove regional imbalance in development of Industries throughout the state. This document indicates long term exploitable potential based on market demand, natural resources, human resources, existing and planned infrastructure.
To plan the future, we should know the present status of our District in terms of availability of resources and present infrastructure. The data were collected 'from various department and organisations. It is hoped that this perspective plan will help planners, investors, Govt. & non Govt. organisations and financial institutions to take decisions on industrial development. Transportation of Uttara KannadaRoads The west coast Highway N.H.-17 runs through the district covering a total length of 162 KM. from Bhatkal to Majaii. The total length of roads including National Highway, State Highway, roads in charge of PWD , Village roads is 7975 KM. The communication roads in the rural areas and coastal areas are extensively damaged during rainy season. The length of National Highway is 238 KM and State Highway is 741 KM. Railways Konkan Railway line passes through the coastal belt connecting important villages and Taluk Head quarters. Apart from this Railway Line about 46 KM connecting Dandeli to Ainavar on the Puna Bangalore section of South Central Railway and a line from Londa to Castlerock in Joida Taluka. Total Railway track is 179 KM with fifteen No. Railway Stations. Ports And Air Ports
14 Minor and Small ports of which Karwar, Belekeri, Bhatkal and Honnavar are very important as they provide good potential for the development of trade and Industries particularly Marine Based Industries.
The Karwar port being one of the best natural harbours, is being upgraded under Port Development Project and on its completion will offer better and increased berthing and docking facilities to large sea faring vessels. The port has considerable potential for the movement of the container cargo as it i!§ found to be logistically viable. The state Govt. has decided to start container handling facility at the port. The port has handled total import and export of 2.22 lakh tonnes and 2.37 lakh tonnes of cargo during 1999-2000 respectively. The port has earned a revenue of Rs. 251.25 lakh in 1999-2000. The State Govt. has earmarked Rs. 85 crore towards expansion plans for the development of Karwar port into one of the modern minor port.

There is no Air Port in the District. Dabolium Air Port of Goa is about 95 K.M. away from Karwar. Sailent Features of Uttara KannadaAdministrative Divisions
For the purpose of administration, the district has been divided into
four Sub-Divisions viz Karwar Sub-Division comprising Karwar, Haliyal & Joida
Talukas, Kumta Sub-Division comprising Kumta & Ankola Talukas, Sirsi
Sub-Division comprising of Sirisi, Siddapur, Yellapur & Mundgod Talukas and Bhatkal
Sub-Division comprising Bhatkal & Honnavar Talukas. Geographical Position Uttara Kannada District, lies between 130 55' and 150 31' north latitude and 74" 9'
units and 750 10' East longitude.
- The Malnad Region consisting of 4 Taluks of Joida,Yellapur, Sirsi, Siddapur which is a land of Mountains and Forests. The elevation in this region ranges 3.5 from sea level to 2900 ft. On an average elevation 2200 ft. from MSL.
- The Coastal region consisting of 5 Talukas of Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar & Bhatkal with its Coastal Bait of about 144 K.M. This Coastal Area is a fairly level plain, 5 to 10 miles in breadth and mainly consisting of rice fields, coconut gardens and estuaries (Brackish Water).
As it approaches the ghats, it breaks up into small thickly wooded hills and valleys. The ghats are covered with dense forest. In the east of Sahyadri crest stretches, a wooded upland 1500'to 2000'above MSL. Mundgod & Haliyal Talukas 3. fall in the up-ghat. Soil The soil of this district is mostly derived from lateritic and trap formations. In the, ghat regions lateritic soil at the base is covered by shades and mixed with humus @ of the forest and has formed a soft type of soil known as Kagadaii soil which is rich i in mineral contents and plant nutrients. In the coastal plain along with sea coast,' the soil is sandy and in number of places mixed with the river alluvia. The low lying marshy lands of the coastal plains are popularly known as Khariands or Gaznis 3. contain clay mixed humus and support salt resistant paddy. If the lateritic soil predominates in the Taluks of Honnavar, Kumta, Bhatkal, Siddapur and Part of Joida, in Karwar and Ankola one can sea leteritic soil mixed with gravelly soil derived from granites and sandy soil. Red loan derived from laterite and traps are noticed in Mundgod, Haliyal and Joida Talukas. Patches of alluvial soil are also found in these, Talukas. The Organic content of the soil is high in uplands. The soil in general is found to be acidic, rich in nitrogen, deficient in phosphorous with a low medium potassium content. Rivers Uttara Kannada is the land of rivers. There are five important rivers flowing in the District from the high range of mountains to the Arabian Sea. The Kali Nadi rises in Joida Taluk, the Gangavali rises in Dharwad District flows through Ankola Taluk. The Aghanashini rises near Sirsi, Sharavati which forms the famous Jog Falls flows through Honnavar .
The other important rivers of the District are the Venktapur and the Varada. Except Varada river which flows eastwards all other rivers flow from East to West, cutting the Western ghats into deep Valleys, thus rendering themselves unfit for irrigation, but at the same time fit for generating hydroelectric power. Coastal Areas Uttara Kannada District as already mentioned, has a coastal line of 144 K.Ms. extending from Majaii on the north to Gorte in Bhatkal Taluka on south and is endowed with natural resources. The District has 14 minor ports. The national Highway No.17 passes along the coastal areas in this district, facilitating good communication and transport. Forest Areas Uttara Kannada District has Forests covering 80 % of the total geographical area. Major forest in Uttara Kannada District is concentrated in Joida, Yellapur, Sirsi and Ankola Taluks. These four talukas accounts for 57.02% of total area. The district consists of five forest divisions namely

Climate & Rain Fall of Uttar Kannada
The climate of the different parts of the district varies greatly. It is generally humid, hot along the coast, cool in the ghat region, and warm and equable in the eastern upghat region. The climate of the entire district may be described as healthy.
The Malnad region is characterised by heavy rain fall in the southern parts, varying from 3048 mm - 3556 mm and the northern transitional belt with 1016mm - 1524 mm of rain fall. The coastal plain receives an annual rain fall varying between 2540 mm - 3556 mm.
Seasonal Conditions: The temperature of the district varies between 15 C' in winter to 34 C' in summer.
The year may divided in to Four Seasons
- Summer from March to May has raising temperature with the maximum temp. of the year occurring in April or May. Humidity begins increasing from May onwards.
- The South West monsoon from June to September lasts for four months from the beginning of June is characterized by overcast skies and heavy rain falls in the coastal region and malnad area.
- October and November constitute the retreating monsoon or coast monsoon region.
- The period from December to February is generally dry with clear bright sky, low humidity and agreeably low temp. There is very little rain fall in this season.
