Theni district is in the Southern part of Tamil Nadu. This district is surrounded by the Western Ghats, with it green stretches of cultivated lands and tea gardens. Silk cotton, soft towels, coffee seeds, cardamom, mango, are the main produce of the district. Theni district is the main route for the tourist bound from Madurai to Kochi via Bodinayakanur and Munnar and Madurai to Thekkadi wildlife sanctuary. Theni is one of the south-western districts of TamilNadu state. It is bounded on the north by Dindigul district on the east by Madurai district, on the south by portions of Virudunagar district and Idukki district of Kerala state, and on the west by Idukki (Kerala). The district administrative headquarters of this district is location at Theni Allingaram town. It has an area of 2889 Sq.Km. and a population of 10, 49,300.
History of TheniThe district of Theni has been carved out as a separate district recently as a result of bifurcation of Madurai district. According to the said bifurcation, three taluks namely Uttama-palaiyam, Periyakulam and Andipatti of the erstwhile Madurai district separated from its parent district to form this new district. At present also this new district is comprised of three taluks and eight Community Development Blocks. Education of TheniTheni hosts the well known educational institutes including the Theni KAMAVAR SANGAM School and Colleges and Theni Melapettai Hindu Nadar Uravinmurai group of Schools &college, The Nadar Saraswathi Boys Higher Secondary School at the heart of the town, takes the credit of making to top 3 schools in Tamil Nadu in a survey conducted by Sun TV. Theni district has the Cumbum town in it, which is famously known behind the name "Cumbum Valley", the only valley in Asia that harvests grapes thrice in a year. Paddy, maize, cotton, sugarcane, grapes, mango, coconut are main agricultural products from Theni. Theni also acts as distribution hub of potato, cabbage, cauliflower cultivated in hilly regions to foot-hill towns in TamilNadu. Also it is the hub for distriubuting Toor dal, Urud dal, Moong dal, Channa dal, Vegetable oils etc to hill regions and to Kerala.
