Madikeri, the headquarters of the Kodagu district is on the ranges of Western Ghats, 250km from Bangalore. It was the capital of a royal family called the Haleri Rajas whose rule was ended by the British in 1834. The place has a fort and a palace building in which district office now functions. The walls of the building have some paintings. There is an old Church inside the fort which houses the State Archaelogy Museum. The Omkareshwara Temple and the tombs of the Kodagu Rajas, Doddaveera Rajendra and Lingarajendra are all in Indo-Saracenic style. The Raja's Seat overlooking the valley gives a panaromic view of the surrounding coffee and paddy growing lush geen lands. The Kodavas have their own distinct culture and folk arts; they are know for their hospitality and valourous military qualities. Near Madikeri is 'Roshanara,' the residence of the late. Field Marshall K.M. Kariyappa.

Nestling beside a curved stretch of craggy hills, MADIKERI (Mercara), capital of Kodagu, undulates around 1300m up in the Western Ghats, roughly midway between Mysore and the coastal city of Mangalore. Few foreigners travel up here, but its a pleasant enough town, with red-tiled buildings and undulating roads that converge on a bustling bazaar.

The Omkareshwara Shiva temple, built in 1820, features an unusual com-bination of red-tiled roofs, Keralan Hindu architecture, Gothic elements and Islamic-influenced domes. The fort and palace, worked over byTipu Sultan in 1781 and rebuilt in the nineteenth century, now serve as offices and a prison. Also worth checking out are the huge square tombs of the Rajas which, with their Islamic-style gilded domes and minarets, dominate the towns sky¬line. St Mark's church holds a small museum of British memorabilia, Jain, Hindu and village deity figures and weapons (Tues-Sun 9am-5pm, except 2nd Sat; free). At the western edge of town, Rajas' Seat, next to KSTDC Hotel Mayura Valley View, is a belvedere, said to be the Kodagu kings' favoured place to watch the sunset. Madikeri is the centre of the lucrative coffee trade, and although auto-rick-shaws will take you there and back for around Rsl50, a walk to Abbi Falls (8km) is a good introduction to coffee-growing country.

History of Madikeri

The history of Madikeri is related to the history of Kodagu. From the 2nd to 6th century AD, the northern part of Kodagu was ruled by Kadambas. The southern part of Kodagu was ruled by Gangas from 4th to 11th century. After defeating the Gangas in the 11th century, Cholas became the rulers of Kodagu. In the 12th century, Cholas lost Kodagu to the Hoysalas. Kodagu fell to the Vijayanagar kings in the 14th century. After their fall, the local chieftains (Palegars) started ruling their areas directly. These were defeated by the Haleri kings who ruled Kodagu from 1600-1834 A.D. Haleri kings made the place Haleri, near Madikeri as their capital. Mudduraja, the third king among the Haleri kings started leveling the land around Madikeri and built a fort in the year 1681. This place was named as Muddurajakeri which later became Madikeri. Kodagu became the part of British India after 1834 A.D.
