Bekal Fort

The Northern most district of Kerala, Kasaragod is world renowned for its coir and handloom industries. Fishing is a prime source of livelihood. Kasaragod is known as the land of gods, forts, rivers, hills & the beautiful beaches.

The fort at Bekal is the largest and best preserved in the state. Kasaragod displays a variety of styles in temple architecture - the unique style of the Madhur Mahaganapathy temple, the typical Kerala style of the Historic malik deenar great juma masjid and so on speak volumes about the rich cultural heritage of the region. The region is rich in traditional folk art forms. Muslims have their own common folk and celebration art forms such as Oppana, Kolkalli, Dauf muttal etc. Oppana is a celebration dance held on the eve of Muslim marriage, where the women to be married are decorated, with whom her friends and relatives do this ritual dance. Theyyam is the dominant folk art form.Yakshagana is also common, but only on sidelines. Kolkali, poorakkali, mangalam kali, maruthkali, etc are folk arts performed in connection with the temple festivals. Mogral is famous for its cultural programmes which has been run by many of cultural associations. There people are so fond of Mappilappattu. It had most famous poets like "mogral kavi".

Fairs and festivals of Kasargod

Eid, Bakrid, Muharram are celebrated in accordance with time of Calicut and uduppi. These festials along with Shivaratri, Dasara and onam are celebrated with much rigor by the people. And so is diwali. There are local festivals like Kumbala veddikett. Another festival of importance is Moodappaseva, a local festival celebrated in the Madhur Temple periodically. Kundamkuzhy Sree Panjalingeswara Kshethra Arattu Mahotsavam is very famous festival in this location.

  • Air: Nearest Airport Mangalore (50 km)
  • Rail: On the Kozhikode (Calicut)- Mangalore- Mumbai route.
  • Road: An Excellent network of roads connects Kasaragod to major towns in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil nadu.

Excursions

  • Ananthapura lake temple: 30 kms from Bekel, this 9th century temple is the only lake temple in Kerala and is the Moolasthanam (original abode) of Anandapadmanabha, the deity of Sree Padmanabha swami temple, Thiruvananthapuram.
  • Valiyaparamba: 30 km from Bekel, this is a perhaps the most scenic backwater stretch in Kerala. Fed by four rivers and dotted with numerous Islands, Valiyaparamba is fast turning into a much favoured backwater resort that offers enchanting boat cruises.
