Kaginele is the small village in Haveri District of Karnataka state, India. This is the birth place of Kanaka dasa.
Kaginele Development Authority has already set up its office at Kaginele and has initiated several works. To start with, the KDA has taken up the excavation in Baada, the birth place of Kanakadasa and has unearthed the foundation structure of the Adikeshava temple, the deity whom Kanakadasa worshipped, and also the chieftain's (Dhannayaka) palace. A few silver and copper coins and the remains of potteries of that time were also found during the excavation.
Kanakadasa (1508-1606) is one of the great saint-poets of Karnataka. Kanakadasa of Kaaginele was a contemporary of Purandaradasa and a disciple of Vyasarya of Vijayanagara. Kanaka was born at Baada, which is at present in Haveri district. Born into a Shepherd family, he was named as Thimmappa by his parents, Beerappa and Bacchamma. The legend goes that Kanaka unearthed a hidden treasure making use of which he built the temple of Keshava at Kaginele and from there on people fondly called him Kanaka, the gold. He was also the chieftain of Baada after the untimely death of his father and later gave up his position as the chieftain and became a daasa, the servant of god. In course of time, he blossomed as a distinct kannada poet and a sharp critic of the caste system .His poems, popularly known as keerthanas, and his poetic works like Ramadhanya charita, Mohana tarangini, Haribhakti sara and Nala charite have earned him a distinct place in the history of Kannada literature. No wonder, Kanaka who echoed the voice of the voiceless has become a cultural icon and an eternal inspiration of the downtrodden of all times.
